How Many Hyphens Is Too Much For A Domain

So you are looking for a domain and you know what, all the good ones are gone.   So you are forced to start looking at making a domain with a hyphen in it.  Well the question is “how many hyphens is ok and what just starts looking like a math problem?”  I am glad you asked.  It has been stated that one hyphen is ok, two is pushing it and three is just used on .info sites, because it doesn’t matter.  Actually the joke is that .info sites are used for spam sites and they usually have that many hyphens.

I agree one hyphen is ok, but it has got to make sense.  Like a phrase where it is word-word.com  Remember it is for a two word phrase if you instead start getting things like word-wordword.com  it just kind of looks off.  But don’t worry there is still a lot of good domains with just one hyphen.  Plus you don’t have to really get a .com domain all the times.

I am of the belief that if you are wanting to just make a site that is not going to be your main bread and butter a .org and .net are ok.  And if you are based in America a .us is ….ok.  I would suggest you look for those in that order too.

Or if you can’t get your domain with the .com, thing of extenders.  Examples might be:

domaincentral.com

domainblog.com

domainsource.com

You get the idea, but the most important thing here if you do this is to put the keyword first.  There is an excellent new tool by the awesome team over at Noble Samurai called Domain Samurai.  This thing is killer and can help you find all kinds of really great domains.  Another excellent tool to use is called Micro Niche Finder.  This is like a spin wheel, you just hit brainstorm and start letting it rock.  I can get lost for hours with this one.  Then like a nut, I go out and buy like 10 domains.

Granted I must say up front I am no professional domainer.  I am a nub when it comes to that, but I have recently seen the extreme importance of this aspect of internet marketing.  Domain age and keyword in domain are probably two of the biggest ranking factors.  If you don’t believe me go do a search for a generic keyword phrase, take a look at some of those shit sites that show up.  You know the ones that haven’t been updated since Al Gore invented the internet.  They are there because of domain age only and the keyword in the domain.  Otherwise they should be weeded out because they are terrible.
